Stone Soup:The Fringe of The Fringe of the Fringe.

  • Bar Brig 96-98 Leith Walk Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 5HB United Kingdom (map)

Stone Soup is a long running but irregular evening of music and spoken word hosted in Edinburgh by davesnewbike and featuring a generous serving of special guests. Competing for the first time with the world's largest arts festival, this month's edition will feature a stone soup debut from singer-songwriter HarLey LoUdOn, Bike frontman Tom Houston performing 'the gap in the fence', and another serving of rootsy pop for grown ups from the hosts.

HarLey LoUdOn
Harley sings, plays piano, writes songs and plays, and mixes with unsuitable lupine company; an ideal candidate for the Stone Soup pot. She has two albums available - 'Summer Sings Within', a jazz-based poem with Brian Kellock, and 'Sometime Somewhere Someone', which draws on the singer-songwriter tradition.
Harley studied, and now works in, music therapy counselling and psychotherapy and says that she 'recently got back into storytelling and howling with the wolves in the woods with a guitar and whisky. I will have spent some time with wolves actually just before the gig in August!' She is a budding playwright and is working on a one woman show about a bird on the bass rock (no gannet jokes please), and plans to record new songs this year.

Tom Houston - the gap in the fence
Bike frontman and singer-songwriter, Tom Houston has three solo albums out, the most recent being 'Plastic Trumpet' released in 2018. For this Stone Soup he offers 'the gap in the fence', a collection of friendly, dark, mischief...exploring the gap between worlds, between states of mind or perhaps just a missing railing. Combining spoken word and song, he'll journey through peat bogs, trains and do-it-yourself stores. But there’s always a slight risk when you go through a gap in a fence: you might get stuck, or end up on the wrong side!

davesnewbike is a Scottish band creating original rootsy pop for grown ups. The Bikers have released two albums and will emerge to greet the sun, press flesh among the crowds, dust off the pillion and perform some fine tunes - resolutely resisting the temptation to be categorised. They are your hosts for the evening.
'Love it!...A bit of Leonard Cohen,...Nick Cave,...Tom Waits,...Chris Isaak....Everything about this enterprise is terrific, apart from the fact they're called davesnewbike!' – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 6 Music
