Stone Soup:The Fringe of The Fringe of the Fringe.
Aug
22
8:00 PM20:00

Stone Soup:The Fringe of The Fringe of the Fringe.

Stone Soup is a long running but irregular evening of music and spoken word hosted in Edinburgh by davesnewbike and featuring a generous serving of special guests. Competing for the first time with the world's largest arts festival, this month's edition will feature a stone soup debut from singer-songwriter HarLey LoUdOn, Bike frontman Tom Houston performing 'the gap in the fence', and another serving of rootsy pop for grown ups from the hosts.

HarLey LoUdOn
Harley sings, plays piano, writes songs and plays, and mixes with unsuitable lupine company; an ideal candidate for the Stone Soup pot. She has two albums available - 'Summer Sings Within', a jazz-based poem with Brian Kellock, and 'Sometime Somewhere Someone', which draws on the singer-songwriter tradition.
Harley studied, and now works in, music therapy counselling and psychotherapy and says that she 'recently got back into storytelling and howling with the wolves in the woods with a guitar and whisky. I will have spent some time with wolves actually just before the gig in August!' She is a budding playwright and is working on a one woman show about a bird on the bass rock (no gannet jokes please), and plans to record new songs this year.

Tom Houston - the gap in the fence
Bike frontman and singer-songwriter, Tom Houston has three solo albums out, the most recent being 'Plastic Trumpet' released in 2018. For this Stone Soup he offers 'the gap in the fence', a collection of friendly, dark, mischief...exploring the gap between worlds, between states of mind or perhaps just a missing railing. Combining spoken word and song, he'll journey through peat bogs, trains and do-it-yourself stores. But there’s always a slight risk when you go through a gap in a fence: you might get stuck, or end up on the wrong side!

davesnewbike
davesnewbike is a Scottish band creating original rootsy pop for grown ups. The Bikers have released two albums and will emerge to greet the sun, press flesh among the crowds, dust off the pillion and perform some fine tunes - resolutely resisting the temptation to be categorised. They are your hosts for the evening.
'Love it!...A bit of Leonard Cohen,...Nick Cave,...Tom Waits,...Chris Isaak....Everything about this enterprise is terrific, apart from the fact they're called davesnewbike!' – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 6 Music

Chris Mossop (Full Band) with Jonty Morgan & The Deliberates

Chris Mossop (Full Band) with Jonty Morgan & The Deliberates

Chris Mossop is a Scottish singer/songwriter who has been compared to the likes of Damien Rice, Ben Howard and Paolo Nutini. He has one of those distinct voices that fully engages the audience and his tone is heartfelt and surprisingly disarming.

He is hot off the back of three tours in Europe in 2018 and was recently a guest on BBC London Radio. Not only that he was a finalist at the ‘Billy Kelly’ Songwriters award in Glasgow. He’s played at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues such as ‘The Borderline’, ‘Glasgow Royal Concert hall’’ and the ‘The Edinburgh Fringe festival’. 2019 will see the release of 5 new singles which will see the biggest collaboration with fellow musicians from the London music community of Noteworthy.

“Stunning Music” - Jason Rosman, BBC London Radio

“Definitely one to watch” - Forth One Radio.

Jonty Morgan

After concentrating on recorded material for a couple of years, Jonty Morgan returns to the

stage with the Deliberates. Playing material from their new record ‘Godless Psalms’, the

Edinburgh five-piece deliver dark, fragmented stories courtesy of Morgan’s particular on-

stage demeanour. Shades of Nick Cave, Cherry Ghost and Shearwater can be felt here but

their exact sound is tricky to pin down.

This will be an exclusive to Brig Below, new material debut.

“We’re very much looking forward to showing folks what we’ve got… so that hopefully they

can figure out what that is”. Jonty Morgan.

Lorna Brooks Plus Rosie Bans
Sep
27
8:00 PM20:00

Lorna Brooks Plus Rosie Bans

Please note this event has been rescheduled to September 27th. All Tickets have been transferred but if anyone needs a refund please email bookings@brigbelow.com

A regular night held by the talented singer songwriter Lorna Brooks Music and joined by a special guest each time. The Guest for this Evening is Glasgow based Singer Songwriter Rosie Bans. We Recommend getting tickets in advance for this as these events are always busy with the last one selling out before the show. Ticket link here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lorna-brooks-plus-rosie-bans-tickets-64171727364

Nowadays it is a rare thing indeed to find a voice that has character and is unmistakeable as the artist- Lorna is such a rarity. Her records have been described as ‘songs of beauty, distinction and subtlety shot through with fragility and delicacy’ Musician Magazine

She is no slouch when it comes to touring either…. She has toured Europe and the UK extensively, often with a full band and more recently acoustically stripped back ( arguably the best way to hear and enjoy her performance) with simply guitar and voice. She is now playing some dates with a more residential feel, as ‘Lorna PLUS’ during which she will highlight some new material and some old favourites with guest appearances

It’s the bluesy grit and determination in her songs that have attracted some truly legendary artists to work with her like Loudon Wainwright III, Janis Ian, Martin Stephenson, James Grant, BertJansch, John Martyn, Jimmy Somerville , Eric Bibb and Eleanor McEvoy to name but a few

Rosie Bans is a Glaswegian independent artist. Throughout her intelligent sophisti-pop songwriting we are treated to exciting melodies and interesting chord progressions underneath lyrics that tell tales of honesty, deceit, family arguments, identity crisis and romantic differences.

"Never lacking emotion, Rosie’s lyrics can often hide hard-hitting story lines” (Louder than War). She pulls out what’s living just under the skin and drapes it over memorable choruses and rhythmic piano grooves for all to see.

Drawing inspiration from, and having been compared to the likes of Imogen Heap, Amanda Palmer and Tori Amos, Rosie is a far cry from the usual female, piano-pop singer-songwriters that dominate the industry today as she is bulldozing her way through the crowds, kicking and swearing and screaming to be heard.

"A talented writer of intensity and integrity" (The Musician Magazine)
“Take heed of her flame red hair as the fiery Glaswegian unleashes her wrath and emotion on us all.” (Louder than war)

Trappist Afterland & Moongazing Hare

Trappist Afterland(Australia) make folk music using vocals, various acoustic stringed instruments; tabla, percussion, harmonium and tanpura drones. They explore psychedelia and chanting amidst folk songs.

Although the influence of folk music from various sectors around the world can be heard in Trappist Afterland's music (The British folk revival, 70's acid folk, Gamelan music, Middle Eastern music, Indian raga) they still maintain a unique and almost otherworldly quality, that sounds unlike anyone else.

With lyrical explorations delving into Gnosticism, Christian mysticism and other esoteric themes, Trappist still manage to keep their music firmly grounded in the present while maintaining a timeless quality.

Moongazing Hare (Denmark)

I try to keep myself warm, calm, loved and out of harm's way. The music is desperately home made and mostly well-intentioned.

Leith Jazz and Blues Festival 2019- Jed Potts Trio

Jed Potts Trio have been supplying only the deepest of grooves and the rudest of shuffles since 2008. The trio is completed (most of the time) by Jonny Christie and Charlie Wild on drums and bass respectively and are all about general musical rascallity, although usually within the confines of a 12 bar structure, mind you.
You can mostly catch J around Edinburgh but every once in a while they get out and play a festival and they've also opened for the likes of yer Ian Siegal, yer Nimmo Brothers and yer The Hoax, to name-drop but a few

Check out this video of them from the last festival. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXJslNF1Kho&feature=share

Leith Jazz and Blues Festival 2019- Ali Afflecks Gin Mill Genies

ALI AFFLECK'S GIN MILL GENIES

It’s a warm welcome back this week to Scotland’s leading exponent of early jazz, Ali Affleck. Representing the pioneers of early music and particularly its forgotten heroines, Ali's fresh interpretations breathe new life into old school jazz.
With a mix of piano-centred prohibition era blues, gospel and jazz, Ali’s repertoire ranges from the saucy and fun to the dark and sinister and all performed by a stellar band featuring Colin Steele, trumpet, Steve Hamilton, piano, Roy Percy, bass and Max Popp, drums. What a line-up, and what a night in store...
About Ali Affleck:

“Music from another place and time that puts a smile on the faces of the here and now…” Jim Gilchrist, Scotsman

The Gin Mill Genies are passionate about ‘pre electric' and piano-centric prohibition era blues, gospel and jazz. The band offer a chance to hear ancient rarely heard Southern blues songs performed with prowess. The musicians include trumpet genius, Colin Steele, and Aberdonian Steve Hamilton on piano

Ali has earned her solid reputation as the quintessential ‘go to’ vocalist for authentic trad Jazz / prohibition era blues and as she is also an American AND a swing dancer, Ali is uniquely placed to deliver this music with cultural authority! Representing the Pioneers of early music (particularly the forgotten heroines!) Ali's fresh interpretations breathe new life into this highly specialised music and this sees her leading the charge for bringing old school Jazz back to the attention of our modern ears!

With an ever growing repertoire, Ali delights in her "lifetimes work" of exploring the jazz archives to find ancient gems to share - from saucy and fun, to dark and sinister, her bands are working hard to resurrect amazing forgotten songs and as an early jazz historian Ali offers up interesting and educational stage chat in a bid to help keep this rich musical heritage alive!

Passionate, expressive, unique and above all, refreshingly unpretentious...Ali Affleck is the real deal - a bona fide Jazz and blues vocalist with a heartfelt vintage twist.

Cambridge based Mammoth Penguins return to Edinburgh in the wake of the release of their new album, (their first on Fika Recordings), 'There's No Fight We Can't Both Win'; another awesome collection of punchy pop songs, garagey guitar fuzz, and an unflinchingly honest and wry songwriting voice, from the band's principle chronicler, Emma Kupa (Standard Fare, Hayman Kupa Band). Their's is a simple formula on paper, but the songs are 3 minute masterclasses in how to spin fresh magic out of 4 chords, drums, guitar and bass. Layers of vocals and keyboards add texture to a sophisticated pop sound all their own.

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival 2019 Jed Potts & The Hillman Hunters

Guitarist and vocalist, Jed Potts, is a blues musician who is starting to really make waves in the Scottish blues scene. He’s got the ability to move into a different gear, if you’re into the real blues. Lately, he’s been in Memphis recording and playing with US star, Brandon Santini and he’s moved to a new level. The Hillman Hunters are his electric trio, playing blues inspired by 50s and 60s American greats, from Freddie King to Howlin’ Wolf. Whether laying back into a Freddie King ballad or digging-in to a hypnotic Muddy Waters groove, they deliver gritty blues played with passion and power.

Sam Brooks & Evering

SAM BROOKES

Sam Brookes is reminiscent of Tim Buckley as he glides between the lower and upper registers of his four-octave range. His pure voice, evocative lyrics and soaring melodies have made him a rising figure in the alt-folk scene.

Tempus, released 3rd May, sees Sam rework Kairos’s most arresting, intimate songs into richly layered acoustic versions with the help of producer Laurence Love Greed and some of the UK’s finest session players.

“he excels at propulsive, narratively rich folk, delivered in a soaring, clear-as-a-bell singing voice” - The Sunday Times
“there are vast emotional reserves at work” - The Independent
“a stunning work on so many levels” - Folk Radio

EVERING

Evering is an acoustic duo formed by Scottish singer-songwriters Chris Yendell (Helensburgh) and Dawn Coulshed (The Black Isle) with the common goal of creating an original sound within an indie / folk genre.

Growing up on the likes of Led Zeppelin, Chris's raw vocals are immediately engaging and are supported by full sounding acoustic guitar riffs. Dawn trained as a classical pianist and her intricate piano work and distinctive vocal harmonies add to the duo’s timeless sound.

Evering released their debut EP titled Running Circles in 2015 which received coverage from BBC Introducing and XFM. Their most recent release, Beyond Oceans EP, took them to Berlin to record with producer Greg Freeman (Goldfrapp, Portico Quartet) and featured the lead single Driftwood.

"Great track with a bursting talent & energy” - Dave Rowntree (XFM)
“Folk at its best” - Fortitude Magazine
