'Everything about this enterprise is terrific, apart from the fact they're called davesnewbike!' - Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio 6 Music Kick-started by singer-songwriter Tom Houston and the electric guitar of Kris Jozajtis, the bike is propelled by Sam Wilson on bass and the percussion of Simon Jaquet. http://davesnewbike.com/ https://www.facebook.com/davesnewbike/

Cambridge based Mammoth Penguins return to Edinburgh in the wake of the release of their new album, (their first on Fika Recordings), 'There's No Fight We Can't Both Win'; another awesome collection of punchy pop songs, garagey guitar fuzz, and an unflinchingly honest and wry songwriting voice, from the band's principle chronicler, Emma Kupa (Standard Fare, Hayman Kupa Band). Their's is a simple formula on paper, but the songs are 3 minute masterclasses in how to spin fresh magic out of 4 chords, drums, guitar and bass. Layers of vocals and keyboards add texture to a sophisticated pop sound all their own.

Trappist Afterland & Moongazing Hare

Trappist Afterland & Moongazing Hare

Trappist Afterland(Australia) make folk music using vocals, various acoustic stringed instruments; tabla, percussion, harmonium and tanpura drones. They explore psychedelia and chanting amidst folk songs.

Although the influence of folk music from various sectors around the world can be heard in Trappist Afterland's music (The British folk revival, 70's acid folk, Gamelan music, Middle Eastern music, Indian raga) they still maintain a unique and almost otherworldly quality, that sounds unlike anyone else.

With lyrical explorations delving into Gnosticism, Christian mysticism and other esoteric themes, Trappist still manage to keep their music firmly grounded in the present while maintaining a timeless quality.

Recommend getting your tickets in advance from this available via this link-https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/trappist-afterland-aus-moongazing-hare-den-tickets-55868076922

Moongazing Hare (Denmark)

I try to keep myself warm, calm, loved and out of harm's way. The music is desperately home made and mostly well-intentioned.

Lorna Brooks Plus Carol Laula
Apr

8:30 PM20:30

Lorna Brooks Plus Carol Laula

A regular night held by the talented singer songwriter Lorna brooks and joined by a special guest each time. This time it’s the talented singer-songwriter Carol Laula. Tickets are £8 + bf and available via this link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lorna-brooks-plus-special-guest-tickets-55508973835

Nowadays it is a rare thing indeed to find a voice that has character and is unmistakeable as the artist- Lorna is such a rarity. Her records have been described as ‘songs of beauty, distinction and subtlety shot through with fragility and delicacy’ Musician Magazine

She is no slouch when it comes to touring either…. She has toured Europe and the UK extensively, often with a full band and more recently acoustically stripped back ( arguably the best way to hear and enjoy her performance) with simply guitar and voice. She is about to embark on some dates with a more residential feel, as ‘Lorna PLUS’ during which she will highlight some new material and some old favourites with guest appearances

It’s the bluesy grit and determination in her songs that have attracted some truly legendary artists to work with her like Loudon Wainwright III, Janis Ian, Martin Stephenson, James Grant, BertJansch, John Martyn, Jimmy Somerville , Eric Bibb and Eleanor McEvoy to name but a few

Scotland is famed the world over for its exports and one of its finest has to be singer-songwriter, Carol Laula. With a style which bobs around somewhere between the smooth, clear delicacy of Karen Carpenter and the tougher edges of Joan Armatrading, it's hardly surprising that she's risen from a young unknown to become a household name. She first captivated the media and her audience in 1990, when her independent single, 'Standing Proud', was chosen to represent Glasgow in its year of culture.

The same decade saw Carol team up with Stuart Adamson to produce a series of songs that will no doubt be seen as a legacy to the talent of the late Big Country singer / songwriter. Carol has also collaborated with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Gos, Ryan Hedgecock of Lone Justice and Australia's Cheryl Beattie.

In 1997, Carol took a study break - supposedly - but in between achieving her MA Honours Degree in Politics & English Literature at the University of Glasgow, she couldn't resist branching out into other aspects of the media and made her debut presenting shows for both BBC Radio and Scottish Television.

The noughties shaped up to be another busy decade her. As well as touring new areas such as Iceland, she has performed across the UK and Ireland with Eliza Gilkyson and appeared at Glastonbury - something of a highlight, when she not only shared the bill with Billy Bragg, but met her hero, Tony Benn.

With eight albums under her belt, the most recent The Bones of It (Vertical Records) released in February 2016.

Tina Louise Avery

Based in Edinburgh, Tina’s songs draw on real and fictional places and the people and emotions she encounters there.  Her clear-voiced lyrics are accompanied by a distinctive finger-picking style. Her influences range from Paul Simon and Suzanne Vega to Natalie Merchant and Kate Bush.

With 2 EPs - 'Riverman' (2013) and 'Tea Amongst the Birds' (2017) - under her belt, she has performed at the Edinburgh and Leith Folk Clubs and appeared during the Edinburgh Fringe at the Tron Kirk. davesnewbike

About to re-enter the studio to record a new EP (yes - these still exist), davesnewbike is still cruising at unsuitable speeds along vertiginous highways. They humbly proffer original, rootsy pop for grown-ups - a cosmic critique for your head and an invigorating shudder for your buttocks.

They are aiming to better Mark Radcliffe's (BBC Radio 6 Music) recent review of their last album - 'Everything about this enterprise is terrific, apart from the fact they're called davesnewbike!'

Kick-started by singer-songwriter Tom Houston and the electric guitar of Kris Jozajtis, the bike is propelled by Sam Wilson on bass and the percussion of Simon Jaquet.  Watch out for unexpected guests.

Eryn Rae, Scott Turnbull, Eve Simpson & Lesley Roley
Mar
2
8:00 PM20:00

Eryn Rae, Scott Turnbull, Eve Simpson & Lesley Roley

A Night of Folk music at Brig Below for only £3 On The Door.

Eryn Rae  Eryn has been playing since the age of 7 under the tuition of the Shetland fiddler Catriona Macdonald. Now 18, she has won numerous prestigious competitions as a soloist including the Robert Burns World Federation Young Burnsian of the year, and was a finalist in the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards. She can be seen playing alongside Scott in the 7-piece band Northern Company, and was a member of the Sage Gateshead's youth folk ensemble, Folkestra, which enabled her to tour internationally in Chicago and Denmark. Eryn's repertoire focuses heavily on traditional Scottish music, but she also plays material from the North of England and Ireland.

Scott Turnbull  Multi-instrumentalist Scott began playing at the age of 8, performing at concerts and ceilidhs both locally and nationally. Guided by well-established musicians including Kathryn Tickell and Ian Stephenson, he gained valuable experience playing with Folkestra and is a current member of Superfolkus, also mentored by Kathryn Tickell, touring and appearing on her recent album 'Waters Of Tyne'. As a member of Northern Company, he has toured internationally to festivals such as Sark, Le Son Continu, Priddy, and Towersey. Scott's main influences stem from traditional folk music, however his playing has also been shaped by jazz music through his time being tutored by pianist Harris Playfair and guitarist Ross Milligan.

Eve Simpson ‘Eve Simpson has a voice as pure as a mountain stream, and boy can she write' - The Crack  Releasing her debut Shelter EP at 17, Eve has toured alongside Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, as well as supporting Beth Nielsen Chapman, UB40 and The Lake Poets. 2018 added to the chart success of Shelter EP; Eve’s sophomore release: ‘Gloria I’m Home’ reached the no.2 spot on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart. Gloria gained Eve frequent airplay on Nick Roberts’ BBC Introducing show, as well as slots on the Evolution Emerging and Mouth of The Tyne BBC Introducing stage, earning Eve airplay on Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 show with ‘Austerity’. As well as her solo project, Eve has gigged as 1/6th of ‘Kathryn Tickell and Superfolkus’. Collaborative writing has seen Eve appear on Tickell’s ‘Waters Of Tyne’ release; and, compose a score on South Shields’ shipyard women for Shona Thompson’s: ‘A Kind of Seeing’ film, receiving a FOCAL International Film Award for ‘Best Footage on Innovative Platforms.’

Lesley Roley  From the Royal Albert Hall to Nashville, Tennessee, audiences have fallen in love with Lesley's pure, heartwarming vocals and winning personality. Her career follows years of live experience, both solo and in bands, which also saw her sharing a stage with The Golden Silvers, Mama's Gun, ex-Fratelli outfit Codeine Velvet Club and The Joy Formidable, and her talent has also been acknowledged with a support slot for Ben Howard, and performances on the Sage Gateshead concourse prior to Katie Melua, KT Tunstall and Martin & Eliza Cathy. After winning “Demo of the Month” in NARC magazine in November 2009, a successful A&R showcase in Notting Hill early in 2010 led to further interest in Lesley’s music. This resulted in a tour of Britain and Ireland in the spring of 2010 supporting Don “American Pie” McLean. En route Lesley acquired a new army of followers with a series of mature performances in some of the UK’s grandest venues, including the world-famous Royal Albert Hall. After regular sell-outs of her first E.P, her eagerly anticipated first album, “Way We Are” was released in October 2010, with a live recording following in July of 2011. This live concert recording features a 7-piece band performing a set that showcases both Lesley's excellent arranging skills and also her easy rapport with an audience. Lesley set off on a five week tour of Nashville, Tennessee, a trip funded entirely by donations from her devoted fans. As well as performing her songs at some of the most prestigious singer-songwriter nights in the U.S, including the infamous Bluebird Cafe, Lesley recorded a 4- track E.P with top local session musicians. The results are available to buy and download on iTunes and CD Baby and demonstrate a country-tinged edge to Lesley's ever-melodic compositions.
